The Board of Trustees of the Village of Sagaponack has announced plans to acquire a site for a Village Hall at 3175 Montauk Highway in the Village of Sagaponack. A
public referendum was held on
August 8, 2008 at Village Hall from noon to 9 p.m. in which the voters approved the purchase 53 to 45.
An informational meeting was held on August 1, 2008. The link below will provide information that was presented at the meeting.
The Village of Sagaponack was incorporated three years ago and the present 300 square-foot Village office is unable to accommodate daily operating needs and is regularly the scene of public meeting attendees standing not only in an entry hallway but also on the outside entry steps. The Board of Trustees plans to acquire 3175 Montauk Highway for the sum of $1,200,000 and to provide up to a maximum of $800,000, if necessary, to renovate the existing residential structure for prompt occupancy as a Village Hall. With only minor alterations, the building, a converted barn, will be able to accommodate thirty residents in a public meeting room and provide office and storage space for the Village Clerk's office and the Building Department.
The Board has engaged municipal finance advisers to guide them through the bonding process that will be used to acquire and improve the site now that the local taxpayers approved the purchase.
The maximum amount of the proposed bond issue would be $2 million, at a cost to taxpayers of $50 per million dollars of assessed valuation for a 20-year period. If the necessary renovations can be accomplished for less, the amount of the bond issue would be reduced accordingly.
Public notices of the approval of the referendum can be viewed on the "Legals" page.
